Empowering all patients
Mass Eye and Ear, a renowned institution with a mission to ensure every child sees and hears throughout their lifetime, found its website falling short. Despite its unmatched expertise, more than half of website users reported a strong desire for improved accessibility, highlighting a critical gap between the institution’s mission and its digital presence.

Behavioral key
Understanding the user began by understanding how vision-impaired people actually engage with a digital experience. Color selection and optimization for screen readers would be crucial to the success of the new website.

Inclusive design is the practice of making products, services, and environments accessible to as many people as possible.
Three-fold strategy:
01
An inclusive design system is as beautiful as it is accessible.
02
A modern and scalable card-based design to dynamically display related content throughout the site.
03
Incorporate a new utility navigation to get users to the resources they need faster.

Our redesign went beyond mere compliance. We became experts in creating color palettes accommodating color blindness, strategically coding pages and tagging images for accurate screen reader interpretation, and rigorously testing across various devices and assistive technologies.
Moving mobile first
Our “mobile-first” approach, guided by the “thumb test” (can a user access all important interactions with one thumb?), guaranteed a seamless experience for mobile users.
